The Kintamani region is defined by one of the largest and most picturesque calderas in Southeast Asia, measuring roughly 10 by 13 kilometers. The ancient caldera collapsed thousands of years ago, creating the outer rim that today carries the scenic ridge villages of Penelokan, Batur, and Kintamani. Inside the sunken basin sits Mount Batur (1,717 meters) and Lake Batur (Danau Batur), Bali's largest lake and a vital sacred water source for downstream rice irrigation.
The signature experience in Kintamani is the pre-dawn hike up Mount Batur. Setting out around 3:30 AM by flashlight, hikers climb through pine slopes and volcanic ash to reach the summit rim just as the sun breaks over Mount Agung and Lombok's Mount Rinjani in the distance. At the peak, local guides steam eggs and bananas over natural volcanic fissures while steam curls from the caldera rim.

Below the volcano, the road winds down to the lakeside village of Toya Bungkah, known for natural geothermal hot springs where mineral-rich waters sit right on the edge of Lake Batur. The highland volcanic soil and altitude also foster Bali's finest Arabica coffee plantations and citrus orchards, which line the roads leading toward Pura Ulun Danu Batur, the second most important temple on Bali dedicated to the goddess of the lake.
