Where to shoot

• Peveril Castle — an 1176 Norman keep on a hilltop above the village, one of England's earliest Norman castles, with a short, steep climb up to the ruins.
• Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern — show caves mining Blue John, a rare banded fluorite found almost nowhere else in the world.
• Winnats Pass — a steep limestone gorge west of the village, the collapsed remnant of an ancient cave system, with a narrow single-track road through it.
• Mam Tor — the 'Shivering Mountain,' topped by an Iron Age hillfort, with the cracked remains of an abandoned 1970s road on its lower slope.

When to go

Late spring through early autumn, when the Winnats Pass road and the Mam Tor ridge walk are clear of winter mud and ice.

What to eat

Order a proper Derbyshire oatcake — a savory, yeasted griddle cake, usually filled with bacon and cheese — from one of the village cafes just off the Market Place.
