Do I Need an International Driving Permit to Rent a Car in New Zealand?

The legal requirement for US travelers

Per NZTA (Waka Kotahi), visitors can drive in New Zealand on a current, valid overseas driver's license without a New Zealand license or an International Driving Permit, provided the license is in English. A US license qualifies on its own — no IDP, no certified translation needed.

This is a real, official rule, not a workaround: NZTA's own guidance for visitors and new residents states it plainly. The confusion mostly comes from other countries (and other parts of this site's own trip) where an IDP genuinely is required — New Zealand just isn't one of them for English-language licenses.

Why some rental companies ask for one anyway

Rental company policy and the legal requirement aren't the same thing. Several New Zealand campervan and car rental brands accept an English-language license alone, matching the legal rule — but some rental aggregators and individual branches still recommend carrying an IDP anyway, mainly to avoid confusion or delay at the counter with staff who may not be familiar with the exact rule for every country's license format.

Practical takeaway: check your specific rental company's own policy before you fly, since it varies by brand and sometimes by branch, but don't assume you're legally required to get one just because a rental site's FAQ mentions it as an option.

The time limit: 12 months again from 1 November 2026

The normal limit is 12 months from your last arrival in New Zealand. A temporary extension to 18 months, introduced in November 2024 to ease a backlog in New Zealand's driver-testing system, is revoked on 1 November 2026. If you arrive on or after 1 November 2026, the 12-month limit applies; if you last arrived between 1 November 2024 and 31 October 2026, you keep the 18-month limit for as long as you stay in the country. The extension only ever covered car licences, not motorcycle or heavy-vehicle classes. Confirm the current limit on NZTA's own site before a long stay.

This time limit mostly matters for long stays (working holidays, extended campervan trips) rather than a standard two-to-three-week rental, where it's a non-issue.

If you want an IDP as a backup anyway

AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) are the only two organizations authorized to issue International Driving Permits in the US. AAA branches can issue one same-day in person (roughly $20 plus a photo fee); mail and online requests take longer. An IDP has to be obtained in the US before you leave — you can't get one issued once you're in New Zealand, and it's not a substitute for your actual license, only a translation of it.

A standard car license also covers rental campervans and motorhomes in New Zealand — vehicles up to about 6,000kg gross laden weight fall under the same class most visitor licenses already permit, which covers virtually every rental campervan a US traveler would book.
