Where should I stay for the March 2027 sumo tournament in Osaka?

By · Published · Last updated

Stay in Namba. EDION Arena Osaka is in the middle of it, about 250 metres from Nankai Namba's south exit, and you can walk back for dinner. Shinsaibashi is the next best, one metro stop or a short walk away. The 2027 March Grand Sumo Tournament (Haru Basho) is reported for Sunday 14 to Sunday 28 March 2027 by Explore Osaka, which cites the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) schedule. One other site says 13 March, but 14 March is the Sunday, and tournaments open on a Sunday. We could not load the JSA's own page, so we have left the hotel search dates open. Tickets go on sale on Saturday 6 February 2027. We were in Osaka from 8 to 11 April 2023, after that year's tournament, so the arena details below come from Explore Osaka.

Dates and the daily schedule

Explore Osaka, citing the JSA, gives 14 to 28 March 2027, 15 days at EDION Arena Osaka in Namba. JapanTravel gives 13 to 28 March. We are using the 14th: it is a Sunday, it matches a 15-day tournament, and it is the date in the JSA schedule cited in our Tokyo sumo guide. The 2026 tournament ran from 8 to 22 March, so this one is about a week later.

Matches run through the day, and the top division starts around 14:00, with the day ending around 18:00. Doors opened around 08:45 on most days in 2026. If you only want the top division, a mid-afternoon arrival is enough. The 2027 times were not published when we checked.

Tickets: sale date and 2026 prices

Tickets go on sale on Saturday 6 February 2027 on Ticket Oosumo English, according to Explore Osaka. Sales opened at 10:00 Japan time in 2026, but the 2027 time had not been published when we checked. Check the time in your own time zone the day before.

2026 prices, per Explore Osaka (2027 prices were not yet published):

• Chair seats: ¥3,500 to ¥11,000 (≈ $22–70) per person.

• Four-person box: ¥34,000 to ¥60,000 (≈ $216–381).

• Ringside: ¥20,000 (≈ $127) per person, sold only on the Japanese site.

• English site fee: ¥2,000 (≈ $12.7) extra per ticket.

Tickets from the English site are printed at a Seven-Eleven in Japan. Weekend-rate days in 2027 are 14, 20, 21, 22, 27 and 28 March, with Monday 22 March a substitute holiday. Weekend tickets go fastest, so aim for those first on sale day, or choose a weekday. Our Tokyo guide covers what the JSA says on resale and same-day tickets.

Getting to EDION Arena Osaka

Explore Osaka gives these distances: Nankai Namba south exit about 250 metres, Osaka Metro Namba Exit 5 about 350 metres, Kintetsu Osaka-Namba 600 metres and JR Namba 800 metres.

From Kansai Airport: the Nankai line runs direct to Namba in roughly 35 to 40 minutes, which is one more reason to stay here. Our Kansai Airport guide covers the other airport trains, for bases such as Tennoji and Umeda.

Where to stay, ranked by time to the arena

The ranking is our own judgement, based on time to the arena. Times marked roughly are our estimates, not timetable figures, so check them in a journey planner. Our where to stay in Osaka guide compares these areas for a normal trip.

1. Namba and Nipponbashi. Roughly 5 to 10 minutes on foot, with food all around. The catch: tourist crowds and small rooms.

2. Shinsaibashi. Roughly 5 minutes by metro or 15 on foot, with shopping and a wider hotel range. The catch: nightlife noise.

3. Tennoji and Abeno. Roughly 10 minutes by metro. Usually cheaper, with JR links to Nara and Kyoto. The catch: streets near Shinsekai are less polished.

4. Honmachi and Yodoyabashi. Roughly 10 minutes by metro, with business hotels that are good value on weekdays. The catch: quiet at night.

5. Umeda. Roughly 15 minutes on the Midosuji line, and the best base for Shinkansen trips and day trips. The catch: the slowest of these, and a maze of a station.

When to book, and what else is on

We have no sourced hotel rates, so this is general advice. The end of the tournament runs into cherry blossom season, so Namba rooms go early, especially for the final weekend of 27 and 28 March. Our cherry blossom forecast is worth reading before you pick dates. Book a free-cancellation room before the 6 February ticket sale, then match your nights to the tickets you get.

Two more reasons to stay on: the 99th spring high school baseball tournament at Koshien is reported to open on Friday 19 March 2027, about 21 minutes direct from Namba by Hanshin train, and Osaka itself rewards a few extra days.
