Photographing Cairns

The main gateway to both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree, built around a free public swimming lagoon since the natural shoreline itself isn't swimmable.

Where to shoot

  • Cairns Esplanade Lagoon — a free, stinger-free public swimming lagoon built to replace an unswimmable natural shoreline.
  • Green Island & Fitzroy Island — the closest reef-adjacent day-trip islands, both around 45 minutes offshore by boat.
  • Crystal Cascades — a 1.2-kilometer sealed path to rainforest waterfalls and swimming holes 20 minutes from the city.
  • Skyrail Rainforest Cableway — a 7.5-kilometer gondola ride over the rainforest canopy to Kuranda.

When to go

May through October for the clearest reef visibility and to avoid marine stingers; book reef trips in advance during the busier June-August months.

What to eat

Fresh Coral Sea seafood along the Cairns waterfront, or a tropical-fruit breakfast — mango, lychee, dragon fruit — from the stalls at Rusty's Markets.

Where to stay

The Esplanade waterfront, within walking distance of the lagoon and the reef-boat departure docks.

Swim in Crystal Cascades' lower pools rather than jumping from the rocks above — it's a genuine, frequently-flagged injury risk there, not just a formality.
