Stari Bar is a ruined hilltop fortress town above the modern coastal city of Bar — over a thousand years of Byzantine, Serbian, Venetian, and Ottoman rule ended in a single 1878 bombardment, leaving a roofless maze of stone walls, towers, and a still-standing 18th-century clock tower.
Early morning, before the sun is directly overhead — the ruins have almost no shade, and the stone lanes hold heat fast through a Montenegrin summer afternoon.
Head back down to modern Bar for grilled fish or Njeguški pršut with local olives — Stari Bar itself has no restaurants, just the ruins.
Base yourself in modern Bar's harbor area, a short drive or a steep uphill walk from the Stari Bar entrance.
Bring water and wear closed shoes — the stone paths are uneven and there's nowhere to buy anything once you're inside the walls.
