The P14 road connecting Nikšić, Plužine, and Žabljak through Durmitor National Park is widely considered one of Europe's most spectacular mountain drives. The P14 panoramic highway (part of the Durmitor Ring) climbs from the Nikšić plain into rugged karst highlands, reaching its summit at 1,907 meters at Sedlo Pass beneath the monumental limestone teeth of Prutaš and Stožina. The road is asphalted end-to-end but is primarily a single lane with frequent paved passing bays (proširenja) spaced every 50 to 100 meters.
Because of heavy alpine snowfall, the high pass is strictly seasonal: it is typically open from late May or early June until the first heavy snowfalls in late October or November. Driving the P14 is safe for any confident driver, provided you do not rush. The universal rule of single-track mountain driving applies: the vehicle closest to a paved passing bay yields and pulls over to let the oncoming car proceed. Drive with headlights on, use lower gears on steep descents to prevent brake fade, and anticipate free-roaming cattle, sheep, and mountain horses around blind curves.
Guardrails are present along the steepest canyon drops, but long stretches across the high plateau feature open grassy shoulders without barriers. Maintain moderate speeds (30–45 km/h) and never attempt passing on blind corners.
The western descent from Trsa down to Plužine descends dramatically through unlit, hand-carved rock tunnels carved into the cliffs directly above the vivid emerald waters of Lake Piva. Stop for local mountain cheese and river trout at village konobas along the plateau.
