How do you get from Barcelona El Prat Airport to the city centre?

By · Published

From Barcelona El Prat Airport, the Aerobús is the simplest option at about €7.75 (≈ $8.7) one way, running 24 hours to Plaça d'Espanya and Plaça de Catalunya in around 35 minutes. The R2 Nord train is cheaper at about €5.50 (≈ $6.1) but only serves Terminal 2 and goes to Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and El Clot; the metro (L9 Sud) is slow because of its airport-only ticket; and a taxi runs about €30 to €40 (≈ $33–45) with a €21 (≈ $23) minimum. We spent 5 days in Barcelona in July 2022. Fares below come from an October 2026 listing and 2026 guides; sources disagree by a euro or two on the Aerobús and the metro airport ticket, so treat them as approximate.

Terminal 1 or Terminal 2?

El Prat has two terminals, T1 and T2, on opposite sides of the airfield, with a free shuttle bus between them. This matters because the R2 Nord train station is at Terminal 2 (section 2B), while the Aerobús serves both: A1 for T1 and A2 for T2.

Metro L9 Sud serves both terminals. If you land at T1 and want the train, take the free shuttle to T2 first, about 10 minutes, which can erase the price advantage.

Aerobús: the straightforward option

The Aerobús runs 24 hours a day, every 5 to 20 minutes depending on the hour, with a journey of about 35 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya. It also stops at Plaça d'Espanya. The adult one-way fare was €7.75 (≈ $8.7) on an October 2026 listing; other 2026 guides list €6.90 (≈ $7.7) and €7.45 (≈ $8.3), so expect about €7 to €8 (≈ $7.8–8.9). You can pay by card at the stop or machine.

Plaça de Catalunya is at the top of La Rambla, the Gothic Quarter and Eixample, so most visitor hotels are within a short walk or metro ride. The Hola Barcelona Travel Card is not valid on the Aerobús, so don't plan around a transit pass here.

R2 Nord train: cheap, but only Terminal 2

The R2 Nord line (Rodalies) runs from the airport station at T2 to Barcelona-Sants in about 20 minutes, Passeig de Gràcia in about 27 minutes and El Clot-Aragó. A single costs about €5.50 (≈ $6.1) on the same October 2026 listing (other guides say €4.60 (≈ $5.1)); the Hola Barcelona Travel Card does cover it.

Check the departure board for trains, because service is less frequent than the Aerobús and disruptions affect the Rodalies network from time to time. Sants and Passeig de Gràcia link to metro lines, which gets you to most of the city.

Metro L9 Sud: usually the worst value

L9 Sud reaches both terminals, but it uses a special airport ticket, listed at about €5.90 (≈ $6.6) per journey in October 2026 (a €5.05 (≈ $5.6) figure appears in other 2026 guides). Standard metro tickets and the T-Casual do not work at airport stations. Reaching the centre means changing lines and takes around 50 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya.

This only makes sense if your hotel is next to an L9 Sud or connecting line, or if you hold an airport-valid pass. For most visitors the Aerobús is easier at a similar price.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis wait 24 hours outside arrivals at both terminals. The minimum fare from the airport is €21 (≈ $23), and a typical fare to central Barcelona is €30 to €40 (≈ $33–45), taking 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Official Barcelona taxis are black and yellow; the meter should run and the fare appears on the display. Some guides describe a fixed €35 (≈ $39) rate; the safer approach is to ask the driver for a quote before the trip starts.

Ride-hailing apps and pre-booked transfers also serve the airport, but prices vary with demand, so compare the app quote with the taxi range above. Our Barcelona tourist scams page covers fare tricks and pickpockets on the Aerobús.

Practical tips for the first hour

Keep your phone and wallet in front pockets on the Aerobús and in the Plaça de Catalunya crowd, where pickpockets are well known. Luggage goes in the racks at the front or the hold; keep a day bag with you. Cash is not needed for the Aerobús if you have a card, and the machines give receipts.

If your hotel is near Sants or Poble Sec, Plaça d'Espanya is the better stop. If it is in the Gothic Quarter, Born or Eixample, use Plaça de Catalunya. Hotels charge the Catalan tourist tax per night, as explained in the Barcelona tourist tax guide.

Which option should you pick?

Landing at either terminal, any hour: Aerobús. Landing at T2 and staying near Sants or Passeig de Gràcia: R2 Nord. Group of three or four, or late night: taxi, since the cost per person drops. Heavy luggage plus a hotel off the main roads: taxi.

If you're counting every euro, Barcelona's overnight stay charge adds up too; see the Barcelona tourist tax 2026 rates, and check Sagrada Familia dress code and tickets when you plan your first day. The Spain eSIM guide covers data on landing, and our 60-day Spain route shows how we connected cities.
