Do you tip in Spain, how much is expected at restaurants and bars, and what is la propina?

By · Published

Spain is one of the easiest places in Europe to get tipping right, because the honest answer is that you often do not need to. Hospitality staff are paid a wage, service is included in the price by law, and la propina is a voluntary gesture rather than an expected supplement. What trips visitors up is that tourist areas have drifted toward northern-European habits, so the norm you see on the Costa del Sol is not the norm in a Madrid tapas bar.

Quick answer

Casual bars and cafés: leave small change or round up. A euro or two is normal; nothing is also normal.

Tapas bars: the same. Locals frequently leave nothing at all and nobody minds.

Sit-down restaurants: 5% for good service, 10% if it was excellent. This is generous by Spanish standards, not standard.

Taxis: round up to the next euro or two.

Hotels: a euro or two for a porter or housekeeping is appreciated, not required.

Service is already in the price

Spanish menu prices include service and tax. There is no separate service line to scrutinise and no expectation that the listed price excludes labour, which is the structural reason tipping is light here.

Many restaurants display a panera or cubierto charge — a small per-person charge for bread or table setting. That is not a tip and it is not a scam; it is a listed charge on the menu.

If a bill says IVA incluido, tax is in the price. If it does not, it will be added, but this is increasingly rare on menus.

Where the tourist norm differs

In Barcelona, the Balearics, and the busier parts of the Costa del Sol, 10% has become common among visitors and staff in those areas may expect it. That is a local adaptation to tourism, not a rule of Spanish culture.

In Madrid, the Basque Country, Galicia and inland cities, the older norm survives: small change, nothing more.

The practical consequence: leaving 5% is safe everywhere in Spain, and nobody will chase you for leaving nothing in a bar.

Paying, and the tapas bar habit

Card terminals increasingly offer a tip prompt. It is fine to decline. Cash is still common in tapas bars and is the easiest way to leave a small tip.

At a bar, you pay as you go or at the end depending on the establishment; watch what others do rather than assuming.

Frequently asked questions

Do you tip in Spain?

It is voluntary and modest. Small change or rounding up at bars, and 5% for good service at a sit-down restaurant, is normal. Leaving nothing for basic service is also accepted.

Is service included in Spanish restaurant prices?

Yes. Menu prices include service and tax, which is why tipping is lighter here than in northern Europe or North America.

What is the panera charge in Spain?

A small per-person charge for bread or table setting, listed on the menu. It is not a tip and not a scam.

Should you tip taxi drivers in Spain?

Rounding up to the next euro or two is normal. A large tip is not expected.
