Coffee is a cornerstone of daily Albanian social life. Throughout Tirana's vibrant Blloku district, locals spend hours sipping espresso and macchiato costing between 80 and 150 Lek (approx. 0.80–1.50 EUR (≈ $0.89–1.7)).
At coffee bars, you do not need to calculate a percentage. Simply leave the small change from your order on the metal saucer or round up the bill by 20 to 50 Lek. If an espresso costs 120 Lek, leaving 150 or 200 Lek is standard etiquette.
Always tip in Albanian Lek (ALL) whenever possible. While hotels, rental car agencies, and large tourist restaurants on the Albanian Riviera readily accept Euros, coins in Euro denominations cannot be exchanged or deposited at local Albanian bank branches without heavy fees.
Leaving small Euro coins (50 cent, 1 EUR (≈ $1.1), 2 EUR (≈ $2.2)) leaves your server with currency that is difficult to spend locally. Pay your bill in Lek or card, and leave crisp Lek banknotes as your tip.
For yellow city taxis (such as Speed Taxi or Green Taxi in Tirana) running on meters, round the fare up to the nearest 100 or 200 Lek. On long-distance airport runs costing 1,500 to 2,000 Lek, adding 200 Lek is appreciated.
For guided mountain excursions or private drivers navigating the rugged roads to Theth or Valbona, tipping between 1,000 and 2,000 Lek per day reflects excellent service.
