What should I wear to visit a mosque in Albania?

By · Published

Visitors can usually enter mosques in Albania outside prayer times. Cover your shoulders and knees, women should bring a scarf for their hair, and take your shoes off at the entrance. Et'hem Bey Mosque on Skanderbeg Square in Tirana is the one most travellers want to see, and entry is free with a donation welcome. The rules here come from local tourism guides rather than a national authority, and they do not all agree on how strict the scarf rule is. We were in Tirana from 16 to 20 September and 7 to 12 October 2023, and also in Shkodër and Berat.

Quick answer: what to wear

• Women: arms and shoulders covered, loose clothing below the knee, and a scarf for your hair.

• Men: long trousers and covered shoulders. Skip the shorts.

• Everyone: shoes off at the entrance. If the shoe area is crowded, carry yours in with you.

• Scarves: one guide says Et'hem Bey has them at the entrance. Another says lending is unreliable across Albania, so pack a light one.

Et'hem Bey Mosque, Tirana

Et'hem Bey was built between the late 1700s and early 1800s, and its frescoes are the draw. Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome outside prayer times. Entry is free and donations help with upkeep; one guide suggests about 100 to 500 lek, and it is optional.

Tourist hours are described as erratic, so mornings are the better bet. If the doors are shut, you can still see frescoes along the outside wall.

The Great Mosque of Tirana is the new central mosque. We found no published visitor rules or hours for it, so ask at the door and dress as you would for Et'hem Bey.

Prayer times and when to go

One guide says mosques are generally open all day but close to tourists for about 20 to 30 minutes at each of the five daily prayers. Another says tourists may stay during prayers if they keep to the back or sides. Waiting outside is the respectful choice.

Friday midday prayer is the busiest. A local guide suggests 09:00 to 11:30 or 14:00 to 16:30 as calmer windows. Hours change with the season and on holy days, so check locally.

Mosques in other Albanian towns

Guides also name the King Mosque in Berat Castle and the Lead Mosque in Shkodër. Dress the same way at both, and do not expect a scarf to be waiting for you. Our Berat guide and Shkodër guide cover the rest of each town.

Photos: allowed outside prayer times, according to one guide. Turn off the flash and do not photograph people praying. Drones near mosques need permission.

Orthodox churches in Albania

Albania has Orthodox churches too, and the rules flip on one point: shoes stay on. Cover shoulders and knees, men take off hats, and a scarf for women is considerate, though less strictly expected of foreign visitors. Keep to the back during Sunday liturgy and do not photograph the service.

Yes, entry is free and donations are welcome.

Can I visit a mosque in Albania during prayer?
