You may have read that Turkish restaurants add servis ücreti (service charge) or a kuver (cover charge) to the bill. That's no longer allowed. An amendment to Turkey's Price Tag Regulation, published in the Official Gazette on January 30, 2026, bans restaurants, cafés, patisseries and similar businesses from listing or collecting a "service charge", "table charge", "cover charge" or any similar fee. Unrequested starters brought to the table before you order can't be billed either.
Voluntary tips are explicitly still allowed, as long as they're at the customer's own discretion. If you see a service charge on a bill, you can ask for it to be removed.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Istanbul, yet many card terminals have no tip option, and Turkish restaurant associations have been lobbying since 2024 for a formal system for card tips, which suggests it isn't standard practice. Cash lira is the reliable way to make sure the tip reaches staff.
Tip in lira rather than euros or dollars. Tourist businesses may accept foreign currency, but foreign coins in particular are hard for staff to exchange.
At a traditional hamam, the attendant who does your scrub and foam wash (the tellak or natır) is usually tipped directly in cash after the treatment; 10–20% of the treatment price is a common guideline. Some upscale hamams state their tipping policy at reception, so check there first.
For a full-day guided tour, tipping the guide is customary, with a smaller amount for the driver. Advice varies widely, so judge it by group size: more per person on a private tour, less on a large group tour. Balloon pilots in Cappadocia aren't routinely tipped, but some passengers leave a small tip for the crew if the flight was good. Turkish taxi drivers don't expect a percentage tip; round up the fare to the next convenient note, and add a little more if the driver helped with heavy bags. For hotel porters, a small note per bag is appreciated, and housekeeping can be left a small amount at the end of a stay.
