Balloons need calm surface winds, good visibility and no rain or snow. Wind is the most common reason for cancellation, followed by fog and rain, especially in winter and around the spring and autumn transitions. A clear sky isn't enough on its own: a still-looking morning can be grounded by wind higher up or forecast to pick up during the flight.
Bad spells can last several days. In May 2026, rain and strong winds kept balloons grounded for a run of mornings, which is the scenario that catches visitors with only one night in Göreme.
Summer and early autumn give the best odds, with spring close behind; December to February has the most cancellations, though no official month-by-month cancellation figures are published; in February 2025, for example, snow, wind and fog kept the balloons grounded for 18 straight days, as reported by NTV. The trade-off is that summer is also when flights sell out and prices are highest.
For context on scale, SHGM figures reported in Turkish media put Cappadocia balloon passengers at about 754,000 in 2025, spread over those 223 flying days. On a good morning in high season, that means a very crowded sky, and a lot of competition for rebooking seats after a run of cancellations.
For April to October, and for any holiday weekend, book weeks rather than days ahead; in winter, a few days is often enough. Choose a company on SHGM's list of licensed balloon operators, and read the weather-cancellation terms before paying: the norm with established operators is a full refund or a move to the next available morning, but rebooking depends on spare seats, and a resale agent's own cancellation rules may differ from the operator's.
Book the flight for your first morning in Cappadocia. If it's cancelled, you can move to the second or third morning; if you booked your last morning, a cancellation simply ends your chance. Pickups are typically before dawn, and the decision may come only once you're at the launch field, so expect some early starts that end back in bed.
On mornings when balloons do fly but you aren't in one (sold out, or skipping the cost), watching them is free.
