Pick Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) if you want the tallest dunes (up to about 150 m) reachable on paved road, about 560 km from Marrakech. Pick Erg Chigaga if you want empty desert: it sits roughly 50 km past the end of the asphalt at M'Hamid, about 450 km from Marrakech, and the last 1.5 to 2.5 hours are off-road by 4x4. We went to Erg Chigaga, via Zagora and Tamgroute, and that remoteness is exactly what you are paying for.
• Erg Chigaga: Marrakech to M'Hamid el Ghizlane is about 450 km on the N9, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (around 2,200 m) and down through Ouarzazate, Agdz and the Draa Valley to Zagora. Allow roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving to M'Hamid, then 1.5 to 2.5 hours of 4x4 track to the dunes.
• Merzouga: about 560 km via Tizi n'Tichka, Ouarzazate, the Dades and Todra area and Erfoud. Allow 8 to 10 hours of driving, all on paved road to the edge of the dunes.
Neither is sensible as a day trip. Most itineraries break the outbound drive with a night in the Draa Valley (Zagora or M'Hamid) for Chigaga, or in the Dades Valley for Merzouga.
The N9 ends at M'Hamid, the last town before the Algerian border zone. From there the route to Erg Chigaga is an unpaved piste of gravel plains, soft sand patches and dry riverbeds, including the dry lakebed of Lac Iriki. It is not signposted and changes after storms, so you need a 4x4 with a driver who knows it; this is not a rental-car drive.

• Dune height: Erg Chebbi at Merzouga has the higher dunes, commonly quoted at up to 150 m. Erg Chigaga's highest crests are usually given as roughly 50 to 60 m above the surrounding plain, though the sand sea itself is larger and more spread out. Sources disagree on exact figures, so treat these as approximate.
• Crowds: Erg Chebbi is ringed by a large number of camps and hotels, and quad bikes and 4x4s are a common sight and sound. Chigaga has far fewer camps scattered across a bigger area, so it is much easier to get a horizon of sand with nobody on it.
• Camps: both areas offer basic tents with shared toilets and 'luxury' camps with beds, private bathrooms and solar power. At Chigaga the choice is narrower and everything arrives by 4x4, so expect simpler facilities at a given price level.
• Camel rides: at Merzouga the classic option is a camel trek from the village edge into camp. At Chigaga most visitors arrive by 4x4 and take a shorter camel ride from camp at sunset or sunrise; multi-day camel treks from M'Hamid exist for those with time.
A realistic minimum from Marrakech is 3 days and 2 nights for either option: one night on the road, one night in the dunes, and a long drive back. Four days makes the Chigaga trip much less rushed and lets you add Aït Benhaddou or a Draa Valley kasbah on the way.
Chigaga trips generally cost more than Merzouga for the same comfort level, because of the 4x4 leg, fuel, and fewer competing camps. Shared group tours to Merzouga are the cheapest way into the Sahara; private Chigaga trips sit at the upper end. Prices vary widely by season, vehicle and camp, so get a written quote that states whether the 4x4 transfer, dinner and breakfast, and camel ride are included.

October to April is the comfortable window. Days are warm, but desert nights from December to February can drop near freezing, so pack a warm layer even if camps provide blankets.
Summer (June to August) brings daytime heat well above 40°C in the Draa and Tafilalt regions, and many travelers find it hard going. Spring can bring strong winds and sandstorms that cut visibility. Snow occasionally closes Tizi n'Tichka in winter, which affects both routes.
It depends on what you want. Merzouga has taller dunes and paved road access; Erg Chigaga is more remote, has far fewer camps and requires a 1.5 to 2.5 hour 4x4 drive from M'Hamid.

Not sensibly. The paved road ends at M'Hamid and the rest is unmarked sand and gravel track. Leave the car in M'Hamid and take a 4x4 transfer with a local driver.
