Since 1 March 2026, Himeji Castle costs ¥2,500 (≈ $15.9) for adults (18 and over) who do not live in Himeji city, up from ¥1,000 (≈ $6.3). Himeji residents still pay ¥1,000 (≈ $6.3), and everyone under 18 now gets in free. A combined ticket with the neighboring Kokoen garden costs ¥2,600 (≈ $16.5). The castle is open 9:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00, and closes only on 29 and 30 December. Himeji is an easy day trip: about 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen, or about an hour from Osaka Station on the cheaper JR Special Rapid.

The increase was one of Japan's most-reported price changes of the year and makes Himeji one of the most expensive castle tickets in the country. The city says the money goes toward preservation and repair of the World Heritage site. The price applies to Japanese visitors from outside Himeji as well as foreigners, so it is a resident discount rather than a foreigner surcharge. Digital tickets for non-residents are sold through the city's online ticket site, linked from the official page, as well as at the gate.
The castle grounds open at 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the last entry to the paid area is 16:00. It is closed only on 29 and 30 December. Hours can be extended in peak periods, so check the official site before you go.
Allow at least two hours for the castle itself. The route climbs the six floors of the main keep on steep wooden stairs, in socks or with shoes in a bag, and the walk from the gate through the baileys and the west bailey's long corridor adds time. Kokoen, just west of the castle, needs another 45 minutes to an hour; it is a set of nine walled gardens built on old samurai residence sites.
Himeji is busiest during cherry blossom season (late March to early April), Golden Week (late April to early May) and summer holidays. On those days the castle can issue numbered tickets (seiriken) that give you a set time to enter the main keep, and lines for the keep can run well over an hour. Arrive before 9:00 on peak days.
The official site publishes a congestion forecast for the year. On ordinary weekdays outside those periods, arriving at opening or after about 14:00 usually means a short wait. Local news reported that visitor numbers fell about 17% year on year in March 2026, the first month of the new price, so off-peak visits may be calmer than before. Himeji also runs ongoing preservation repairs, and parts of the site can be covered or closed; the official site lists current notices.
From Osaka: the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly ¥3,500 to ¥4,200 (≈ $22–27) one way depending on the seat. The JR Special Rapid (Shinkaisoku) from Osaka Station takes about 60 to 65 minutes with no change and costs about ¥1,500 (≈ $9.5), less than half the price. Unless you hold a JR Pass, the Special Rapid is the better value.
From Kyoto: the Shinkansen takes about 45 to 55 minutes and costs roughly ¥4,700 to ¥5,100 (≈ $30–32) one way; the Special Rapid from Kyoto Station runs straight through to Himeji in about 90 minutes for about ¥2,300 (≈ $14.6). Himeji Station is about 1 km from the castle: a 15- to 20-minute walk straight up Otemae-dori, with the keep in view the whole way. Many visitors pair Himeji with Kobe on the way back; base yourself in our Osaka guide area for the easiest connections.
For most visitors, yes. Himeji is one of only twelve Japanese castles with an original keep, the largest and best preserved of them, and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. Most famous castles in Japan, including Osaka's, are concrete reconstructions with museums inside; at Himeji you climb the actual 17th-century wooden structure.
If the price is a problem, you can see the castle's exterior for free: the outer grounds and Sannomaru square, the moat walk and the view from Otemae-dori cost nothing. The combo with Kokoen adds the garden for only ¥100 (≈ $0.63) more, which is the best value if you have the time.
