Standing face-to-face with Mount Fuji (Fujisan) is an unforgettable highlight of visiting Japan. Located roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo in the Fuji Five Lakes region, Lake Kawaguchiko offers the most accessible viewing platforms, ropeway cable cars, and lakeside walking paths. Here is how the three main transit options—the direct Fuji Excursion train, the Shinjuku highway bus, and guided day tours—compare.
The Fuji Excursion (Fuji Kaiyu) is a limited express train departing directly from Shinjuku Station and arriving at Kawaguchiko Station in 1 hour and 55 minutes without requiring any transfers at Otsuki.
It is completely immune to highway traffic jams and features comfortable reserved seating. Tickets cost approximately 4,130 JPY (≈ $26) each way. Because only a few departures run daily, morning seats sell out weeks ahead of time during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.
Direct highway express buses depart every 15 to 30 minutes from the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) directly to Kawaguchiko Station, taking approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes in light traffic.
At roughly 2,200 JPY (≈ $14.0) each way, the bus is half the price of the train. The critical downside: evening return traffic on the Chuo Expressway on weekends and public holidays can easily turn a 105-minute journey into a 3.5-hour crawl.
Organized small-group tours departing from Shinjuku or Tokyo Station remove all transit logistics. Rather than relying on crowded local lakeside shuttle buses, a tour coach takes you directly to multiple dispersed viewpoints in a single day: Chureito Pagoda, Oishi Park, Arakurayama Sengen Shrine, and the traditional thatched cottages of Oshino Hakkai.
Most tours include pickup, English-speaking guides, entrance fees, and seasonal fruit picking, making them the most stress-free option for families and photographers.
The winter months (November through February) have the highest visibility rates (around 70–80% clear days) and iconic snow-capped peaks. Summer months (July and August) are often hazy with cloud cover obscuring the peak.
The JR Pass covers the portion between Shinjuku and Otsuki Station. The segment from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko operates on the private Fujikyu Railway track, requiring a modest supplemental fare (around 1,170 JPY (≈ $7.4)) paid on board.
From Kawaguchiko Station, take the Fujikyu Railway to Shimoyoshida Station (15 minutes). From there, walk 10 minutes to the entrance of Arakurayama Sengen Park and climb the 398 stone steps to the pagoda viewing deck.
