Hue and Hoi An are roughly 120 to 130 km apart, separated by the mountains that run down to the sea at the boundary between Hue and Da Nang. Highway 1 goes through them in the 6.28 km Hai Van Tunnel; the old road goes over them on the Hai Van Pass, climbing to nearly 500 m with views over Lang Co and Da Nang Bay.
Standard buses and transfer vans take the tunnel, so you see none of the coastline. Motorbikes are not allowed in the tunnel at all, which is why easy rider tours always use the pass. If the views are the point, you need an easy rider, a private car booked "via Hai Van Pass", or the train.

Published rates in 2026 were about $70 for a sedan (up to 3 guests), $85 for an SUV (up to 4) and $120 for a 16-seat van, including fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver, with entrance fees excluded. There is no train station in Hoi An. The railway runs Hue to Da Nang (103 km, about 2.5 to 3 hours), and the line hugs the coast around the Hai Van headland, giving you about 45 minutes of the scenery without the motorbike. Heading south, sit on the left side for the sea views. The fastest daytime trains are the SE services; the slower Heritage trains (HD) stop at Lang Co and add live traditional music and food on board.
Soft seats were about 77,000 to 190,000 VND (≈ $3.0–7.4) (roughly $3 to $7) when booked direct on Vietnam Railways' site, dsvn.vn; resellers charge more for the same seat. Overnight SE trains pass the scenic stretch in the dark, so pick a daytime departure. From Da Nang station, Hoi An is about 30 km south by Grab or taxi.
Direct buses and limousine vans go door to door or to central drop-off points in Hoi An in about 2.5 to 3.5 hours via the tunnel.
