Is Thailand good for solo travel?

By · Published

Yes, Thailand is one of the easiest countries in Asia to travel alone: the Bangkok, Chiang Mai and island route is well worn, cheap, and full of other solo travelers. The exceptions are specific. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and parts of southern Songkhla, and within 20 km of the Cambodian border. The risks that actually hit solo visitors are drink spiking, scooter crashes and taxi scams. We spent about six weeks in Thailand from December 2022 to January 2023, including 10 days in Bangkok across two visits, 6 in Chiang Mai, 7 in Chiang Rai, 3 in Mae Hong Son and 4 in Ao Nang.

How safe is Thailand for a solo traveler?

Our is Thailand safe to visit page covers the full advisory picture. In short, the US State Department rates Thailand Level 1 (advisory issued July 2026) and the UK page, updated October 2026, lists the far south and the Cambodian border as no-go areas. None of the usual solo route touches them. The FCDO also flags severe flooding in parts of Thailand including Bangkok districts, so check the weather before you fly.

For solo travelers the most important line is about drink spiking. The UK government says sexual assaults happen most often around full moon parties and bars late at night, and that spiking affects men and women. Buy your own drinks, watch them being made, never accept a drink from a stranger, and use an app for your ride home. Bar measures can be stronger than at home and there have been deaths from methanol in cheap spirits, so avoid buckets and unlabelled bottles.

Per the FCDO, cannabis is illegal to carry out of Thailand, even when transiting, and offenders may be arrested or fined. Do not take any home.

Taxis, tuk-tuks and scooters

Use Grab or Bolt in Bangkok rather than hailing a taxi at a tourist site: see Grab vs Bolt and Bangkok taxi scams. Tuk-tuk drivers who say a temple is closed and offer a tour are a standing scam near the Grand Palace.

Scooter rental is the most common cause of serious injury to visitors. If you have no motorcycle licence or have never ridden, skip it: insurance often refuses claims, and rented bikes in Chiang Mai and the islands are involved in a lot of accidents. Songthaews (shared pickup taxis) and Grab cars cover most solo needs.

What solo travel in Thailand costs

Our model's typical band for Thailand is US$30 to $50 per person per day on a budget and US$60 to $120 at mid-range, from published 2025 and 2026 cost guides, not from what we spent. Those bands assume a shared room. Our estimates assume a private room for one raises accommodation by roughly 1.5 times on a budget and 2 times at mid-range.

Dorm beds in Bangkok run about US$7.60 to $14 a night in published hostel averages, so a solo budget traveler can sleep very cheaply and still have a private fan room for little more. The big costs are the islands and beach areas, plus ATM fees of roughly 220 to 250 baht per withdrawal on foreign cards, so withdraw larger amounts less often. Where to base yourself

Chiang Mai is the classic solo base. We spent 6 days there in December 2022. It has co-working cafes, long-stay guesthouses and group day trips to waterfalls and sanctuaries, and our solo cities collection says you can arrive alone and have a full social calendar within a week. Read where to stay in Chiang Mai and how many days in Chiang Mai, plus the Chiang Mai guide.

Bangkok (10 days across December and January) is the transport hub and a fine solo city if you pick a base near the BTS or MRT: where to stay in Bangkok. Chiang Rai (7 days) is quieter, and good for a slower few days: Chiang Rai guide. On the coast, Ao Nang (4 days in January 2023) is the Krabi base for island hopping; see Bangkok to Krabi and Ao Nang.

For a full route, our 6-week route goes from Bangkok north through Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Sukhothai, Lampang and Chiang Mai, then Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Khao Sok and Ao Nang.

Getting between cities alone

The overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a classic, and it matters for solo travelers: on first-class, a single berth may mean sharing a two-berth compartment with a stranger of the same sex, and the single-use fare was about 2,446 baht on train 9 in our guide, versus 1,446 baht upper and 1,646 baht lower. See first vs second class on the sleeper train. Other options are in getting around Southeast Asia by bus, train and ferry.

Meeting people and staying comfortable

Hostels, cooking classes, day trips and the Chiang Mai cafe scene are the easiest ways to meet people. Dress rules at temples matter even when alone: shoulders and knees covered, see temple dress code in Thailand. Before you fly, complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card and check do I need a visa for Thailand.

Emergency numbers

Save 1155 for the Tourist Police, which is staffed 24 hours with English-speaking operators per published guides, 191 for police, 1669 for medical emergencies and 199 for fire. The 191 operator may not speak English, so ask for the Tourist Police if you are stuck. Keep your insurance policy number in your phone, since a private hospital will ask for it before treatment.
