Where should I stay for the 2027 Melbourne Cup?

By · Published · Last updated

Stay in the CBD near Flinders Street or around Southern Cross and take the direct race train: it is the simplest trip to Flemington, with the most rooms and the best evening afterwards. North Melbourne and Kensington are closer and on the same line, but have far fewer hotels. The 2027 Melbourne Cup should be on Tuesday 2 November 2027. That date rests on the rule that the race is run on the first Tuesday in November, and public holiday calendars agree, but we could not find a Victoria Racing Club (VRC) race page for 2027, so we have left the hotel search dates open. We were in Melbourne from 21 to 25 January 2023, well outside the Carnival, so the race-day details below come from the VRC's 2026 information.

Melbourne Cup 2027: the date and how firm it is

The Lexus Melbourne Cup is run at Flemington Racecourse over 3,200 metres. Tuesday 2 November 2027 is a rule-based date: the Cup is held on the first Tuesday in November, and holiday calendars list that Tuesday as Melbourne Cup Day. The 2026 Cup date is Tuesday 3 November.

The rest of the Carnival is projected from the 2026 pattern, with no 2027 announcement behind it: Derby Day on Saturday 30 October, Oaks Day on Thursday 4 November and Stakes Day on Saturday 6 November. Do not book a Derby-only or Oaks-only trip around these until the VRC publishes them.

The race is traditionally run at about 3pm, but the VRC's 2026 page we read did not list a start time, so check it on the day's race card.

Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in metropolitan Melbourne, which affects shop hours and adds local crowds to the visitors.

Tickets: 2026 prices as a guide

The prices below are the VRC's 2026 prices, in Australian dollars. No 2027 prices were published when we checked, and we would expect the 2027 sale around the middle of 2027, though that is our estimate.

• General Admission: A$120.

• Two-day pass with Oaks Day: A$150.

• Dress Circle: A$245.

• Lawn Stand: from A$250.

• Hill Stand: from A$575.

• Hospitality: A$1,095 to A$2,195.

Many areas of the course are for members only, and a dress code applies in members' areas, so check the rules for your ticket type before you pack.

Getting to Flemington

Race-day trains are the main way in. In 2026, according to the VRC, expresses ran from Flinders Street between 8:40am and 1:28pm, and trains from Southern Cross via North Melbourne between 8:53am and 1:33pm. Return trains ran from 3:10pm to a last train at 9:02pm. Gates opened at 9am and the first race was at 10:45am. Expect the 2027 pattern to be similar, and confirm it when the VRC publishes the race day.

That 9:02pm last train is the detail to plan around. If you stay on at the course or nearby, know your way home before the last service leaves.

From Melbourne Airport, there is no train. Take SkyBus to Southern Cross, then the race train. Our Melbourne Airport guide has the fares and alternatives. Most overseas visitors also need an ETA or eVisitor before boarding; see our Australia ETA guide.

Where to stay, ranked by time to the racecourse

The ranking is our own judgement, based on time to the racecourse. Times marked roughly are our estimates, not timetable figures, so check them in the Transport Victoria journey planner.

1. Flemington, Ascot Vale and Moonee Ponds. Roughly 5 to 20 minutes on foot or by tram, so you can skip the race trains altogether. The catch: few hotels, mostly apartments and motels.

2. North Melbourne and Kensington. Roughly 10 minutes by race train or tram, and on the line. Usually cheaper than the CBD. The catch: a limited choice of hotels.

3. Docklands and Southern Cross. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes by race train. The airport bus and the rail hub are in one place, which suits a short trip. The catch: the area can feel flat after dark.

4. CBD, Flinders Street end. Roughly 15 to 20 minutes by express. This is the best base for dinner after the races and for the rest of a Melbourne trip. The catch: Cup week is one of the city's most in-demand periods, so book early.

5. Southbank. Roughly 20 to 25 minutes, including the walk to Flinders Street. Good for river dining. The catch: the bridges get crowded after racing.

When to book

We have no sourced hotel rates for Cup week, so this is general advice. The block from the Saturday to the Tuesday is the one to book months ahead. Take a free-cancellation rate now, then recheck the dates once the VRC publishes the 2027 race days.

The 2027 Rugby World Cup is also running in Australia, with the semi-finals in Sydney on 5 and 6 November, so flights around Australia may be busier than in a normal Cup year. See our Rugby World Cup guide if you plan to combine the two.

Spring weather in Melbourne swings quickly, so pack a layer as well as your race-day outfit. Our best time to visit Australia guide compares the seasons, and our tipping in Australia guide covers restaurants.
