Stay around The Rocks or Circular Quay if you want to walk back to your bed after 42 km, because the race finishes at the Sydney Opera House. Stay at Milsons Point or North Sydney if you want the shortest trip to the start, and accept crossing the harbour again afterwards. The 2027 TCS Sydney Marathon is on Sunday 29 August 2027, according to the race's official FAQ, with the Mini Marathon on Saturday 28 August. The hotel search above opens on Saturday 28 to Monday 30 August. The 2027 ballot closed on 19 October 2026, so if you did not enter, charity and tour places are the routes left. We were in Sydney from 17 to 19 February 2023, so the race details below come from the organiser and Transport for NSW.
The official FAQ gives Sunday 29 August 2027 for the marathon and Saturday 28 August 2027 for the Mini Marathon. It describes Sydney as Australia's Abbott World Marathon Major, with a course across the Harbour Bridge to a finish at the Opera House.
In past years the start has been at Bradfield Park, Milsons Point, on the T1 North Shore line. We did not find a 2027 course page, so confirm the start in your runner information. Group start stations may vary.

The ballot ran from 29 September to 19 October 2026, per the official FAQ, and is closed. The FAQ says the draw takes place in November 2026, and that successful applicants' cards are charged on 3 November 2026.
2027 fees, per the official FAQ: A$285 for Australian and New Zealand residents and A$340 for international runners, plus a mandatory carbon levy and optional donations.
One running site reports about 123,000 applications in 2026 for about 40,000 places, so a ballot place is far from certain. Charity and tour routes remain the alternative if you were not drawn.
In past years, Transport for NSW closed the Harbour Bridge and other major roads from about 3:30am to 3pm, with free public transport for runners on event day. Those details are from earlier editions, so wait for the 2027 announcement before relying on them. In practice, plan to arrive at the start by train or on foot.
From Sydney Airport: take the T8 train towards Central. The airport station access fee is the expensive part of that trip, and our Sydney Airport guide has the fee, the bus routes that avoid it and the taxi options. Most overseas visitors need an ETA or eVisitor before boarding; see our Australia ETA guide.

The ranking is our own judgement, based on time to the start. All times here are our rough estimates, not timetable figures, so check them in the Transport for NSW trip planner. Runners who care more about the walk home should read this list together with the finish notes.
1. Milsons Point and North Sydney. Roughly 5 to 15 minutes to the start, on foot at dawn. The catch: after the race you have to get back across the harbour.
2. Wynyard and Barangaroo. Roughly 5 minutes by train to Milsons Point. Direct T1 access. The catch: closures around Barangaroo.
3. The Rocks and Circular Quay. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes to the start by T1, and roughly 5 minutes from the finish. This is our pick for the walk home. The catch: the most in-demand part of Sydney, and closures run through it.
4. Chatswood and Crows Nest. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes by T1 or metro. Usually cheaper rooms, and good Asian food. The catch: you need an early train.
5. Surry Hills and Central. Roughly 15 to 20 minutes, with the airport train nearby. The catch: more changes on race morning.
We have no sourced hotel rates, so this is general advice. The Netball World Cup runs from 25 August to 5 September 2027 at Sydney Olympic Park, so race weekend falls during that tournament. The netball is out in the west, but flights and citywide rooms will feel both events. Rooms along the T1 corridor are the ones to book first, with free cancellation.
Late August is the end of Sydney's winter, generally cool and good for running, but pack a layer for the wait at the start. Our best time to visit Australia guide has the seasons, and our Berlin Marathon and Tokyo Marathon guides cover other big-city races.
