Is Italy good for solo travel?

By · Published

Yes, Italy works well for solo travel: trains link the main cities, restaurants are used to single diners, and the realistic risks are pickpockets and bar-drink strength, not violence. The solo cost problem is Venice, where rooms and the day-tripper fee add up, and the coperto cover charge that every diner pays. We spent about nine days in northern Italy in summer 2023: Verona (2 days), Bologna (4) and Venice (3). That is the base for this page, so we recommend the north and say plainly that we did not travel Rome, Florence or the south.

How safe is Italy for a solo traveler?

The UK Foreign Office says petty crime is higher in city centres and at major tourist attractions, especially bag-snatching and pickpocketing, with the most risk on public transport, at airports, at tourist sites and in bars, cafes and restaurants. Thieves use distraction techniques, such as asking for help or directions. Alone, you have no one to watch your bag, so keep it zipped in front on buses and vaporetti, and never hang it on a chair back.

It also says to use only officially licensed taxis, ordered by phone or app or taken from an official rank, and to avoid unlicensed street traders, which is illegal and can lead to a fine. Do not accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended; drinks in Italian bars are often stronger than in the UK. The emergency number is 112. Named scams are in tourist scams in Italy, and the overall picture is in is Italy safe to visit.

The FCDO also lists natural hazards: minor earthquakes happen regularly, there are active volcanoes in the south, wildfires are a risk in summer, and Venice often has high water in winter. It does not give women-specific guidance for Italy.

What solo travel in Italy costs

Our model's typical band for Italy is US$55 to $80 per person per day on a budget and US$115 to $200 at mid-range, from published 2025 and 2026 cost guides, not what we spent. Those assume a shared room, and in our estimates a room to yourself raises accommodation roughly 1.5 times on a budget and 2 times at mid-range. The biggest items are Venice rooms and the day-tripper fee, plus coperto on restaurant bills. Bologna is the cheaper base.

Coperto is a per-person cover charge that appears on the bill in many restaurants. It is not a tip, and it hits a solo diner at full price. Read coperto and tipping in Italy. City tourist taxes are charged per night per person, so a longer solo stay in one city costs the same per night as a couple's, per person: Italy tourist tax by city. If you visit Venice for a day, read the Venice entry tax and QR code. The full budget: how much a trip to Italy costs.

Eating alone in Italy

Eating alone is normal at lunch, at bars and at cafes, where you drink a coffee standing at the counter. Restaurants at dinner sometimes seat solo diners at poorer tables in tourist areas, so choose places a few streets from the main square and ask for the menu with prices before you sit. Bologna rewards solo diners: many trattorias have shared tables and the city is known for tortellini, tagliatelle al ragu and mortadella; see what to eat in Bologna. In Venice, cicchetti bars serve small bites at the counter, which is the best way to eat one portion at a time: what to eat in Venice. In Verona: what to eat in Verona. For self-catering, see Italian grocery stores.

Where to base yourself

Bologna (4 days) is the best solo base in the north: a walkable arcaded centre, a student population, cheaper rooms than Venice, and fast onward connections. See the Bologna guide. Verona (2 days) is small enough to feel safe on foot at night and works as a day or overnight between Venice and Bologna. Venice (3 days) is the most expensive and the one where you plan around crowds: stay a night rather than day-tripping, and check the Venice guide and where to stay in Venice.

Our route went Verona, Bologna, then Venice. A matching plan is Italy itinerary: Venice, Verona and Bologna, and the country hub is the Italy guide. Weather and seasons: best time to visit Italy. Italy as a whole has far more than we cover, so for Rome, Florence and the coast read a source that has been there.

Etiquette and practicalities alone

Dress rules apply to churches, where shoulders and knees must be covered; see what to wear in Italy and what is considered rude in Italy. Phone data: Italy eSIM for tourists. Packing: what to pack for Italy. Driving is not worth it for a solo city route, since city centres have limited traffic zones; see driving in Italy and ZTL if you do.

Meeting people if you want to

Hostels in Bologna and Venice run tours and shared dinners, and aperitivo bars at 6 to 8 pm are the easiest social setting in Italy: a drink with free snacks at the counter, where striking up a conversation with the bartender is normal. Food classes (pasta, tortellini) in Bologna are the best way to share a table with other travelers.
