Perched on the slopes of Mount Toham in Gyeongju (the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom), Bulguksa Temple is South Korea's most revered UNESCO World Heritage Buddhist site. Built in 751 AD, it exemplifies golden-age Silla stone masonry, housing sacred national treasures like the Dabotap and Seokgatap stone pagodas.
South Korean Buddhist temples like Bulguksa do not turn casual tourists away at the ticket gates, but respectful attire is strongly expected when approaching active prayer sanctuaries like Daeungjeon (the Hall of Great Enlightenment).
Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and reaches past your knees. Avoid provocative clothing, revealing tank tops, or short workout shorts. Because Gyeongju temple visits involve climbing historic stone steps and hillside walking, comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended.
Before stepping across the wooden threshold into any prayer hall, remove your shoes and slip them into the provided cubbies or open shoe racks outside. Step inside in clean socks (never bare feet).
Crucially, never step directly onto the raised wooden threshold (muntteok) of temple doorways—always step clean over it. In traditional Korean Buddhist philosophy, the threshold represents the boundary between the mundane world and the Buddha realm; stepping on it brings misfortune and disrespects the monastery.
While outdoor photography of Bulguksa's stone bridges (Cheongungyo and Baegungyo), courtyard gardens, and pagodas is fully permitted, photography is strictly banned inside prayer halls where Buddha statues reside and monks chant.
If monks or lay worshipers are performing prostrations (jeol), walk quietly along the perimeter walls and never walk directly across the front of an altar between a worshiper and the Buddha statue.
From Busan, Bulguksa is an easy day trip: take the KTX high-speed train from Busan Station to Gyeongju Station (formerly Singyeongju) (approx. 30 minutes), then board local City Bus #700 directly to the Bulguksa parking lot.
From Seoul, take the KTX from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station (formerly Singyeongju) (approx. 2 hours). Alternatively, organized day tours booked through Klook combine Bulguksa with the nearby Daereungwon Royal Tomb Complex, Donggung Palace, and Wolji Pond with round-trip transport.
