Is Vietnam good for solo travel?

By · Published

Yes, Vietnam is an easy and cheap country for a first solo trip in Asia, and the hostel trail from Hanoi to Hoi An to Saigon is busy all year. Violent crime against visitors is rare. What goes wrong is more ordinary: crossing roads in Hanoi, bags snatched from passing motorbikes, unlicensed taxis, and drink spiking reported in tourist areas. We spent about four weeks in Vietnam from April to May 2023: Hanoi (about 3 days), Ninh Binh (4), Hue (2), Hoi An (6), Da Lat (5), Nha Trang (3), Ho Chi Minh City (8 across two visits) and Can Tho (2). This page sets out safety by type, costs, how to move along the country alone and where to base.

How safe is Vietnam for a solo traveler?

The US State Department rates Vietnam Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions (advisory issued June 2026), per our is Vietnam safe to visit page, naming petty crime in tourist areas as the main concern. The UK Foreign Office says violent crime against foreigners is rare but petty theft and pickpocketing occur regularly, motorcycle bag-snatching is common, and crime rises around Christmas and Tet.

Practical rules: carry your bag on the side away from the road, do not walk with your phone held out near the kerb in Ho Chi Minh City, and never leave your passport with a motorbike rental shop or landlord. Keep a photo and digital copy and the original in a safe place. Tet dates and closures are in Tet 2027 in Vietnam.

Taxis, drinks and women travelling alone

The FCDO reports drink spiking and sexual assault in tourist areas, often linked to unlicensed taxi drivers, and that women have reported indecent assault and harassment, especially when walking alone. It also says Vietnamese law places a higher burden on victims to show they did not consent, particularly if they had been drinking. The steps it gives are the right ones: buy your own drinks and keep them in sight, refuse snacks or gum from strangers, use pre-booked transport or official apps, and save your accommodation's location in your map app before you go out.

Scammers may pose as Grab or Xanh SM staff at airports and stations, so book the whole journey in the app. Free hotel shuttle buses that you did not arrange yourself can be scams, and only official exchange counters are legal for changing money. More named scams are in tourist scams in Vietnam.

The FCDO also warns about jobs that seem too good to be true, since some people have been trafficked to neighbouring countries and pushed into online scams. Never hand your passport to an employer.

What solo travel in Vietnam costs

Our model's typical band for Vietnam is US$25 to $35 per person per day on a budget and US$50 to $90 at mid-range, from published 2025 and 2026 cost guides, not from what we spent. Those assume a shared room. A private room to yourself raises the accommodation line by roughly 1.5 times on a budget and 2 times at mid-range, in our estimates.

Hostel dorm beds in Hanoi run about US$7 to $12 a night in published averages, and a basic private guesthouse room is a modest step up, which is why Vietnam is gentler on solo travelers than countries where single rooms cost nearly as much as doubles. Street food is priced for one. Details: how much a trip to Vietnam costs and tipping in Vietnam.

The route and how to move along it alone

Most solo travelers go north to south or the reverse, and the stops fall into a rhythm. Hanoi is the capital and the best first base: where to stay in Hanoi, the 3 days in Hanoi guide, and the Hanoi train street rules. Ninh Binh (we spent 4 days there) is an easy day or overnight: Hanoi to Ninh Binh. Then Hue (2 days) via the sleeper train, bus or flight, and Hoi An (6 days) over the Hai Van Pass: Hue to Hoi An.

After Hoi An our route continued to Da Lat (5 days), Nha Trang (3), Ho Chi Minh City (8) and Can Tho (2) in the Mekong Delta. The full order with durations is in our 4-week route, and the shorter 2-week Hanoi to Saigon plan suits a shorter solo trip. City guides: Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat.

On sleeper trains, compartment doors lock from the inside and Vietnam Railways sleepers are popular with solo women backpackers, per our Vietnam train guide. For buses and ferries across Southeast Asia, see getting around Southeast Asia.

Weather and timing

The FCDO says the rainy season runs June to September in the north and south and October to December in central Vietnam, with tropical cyclones mostly affecting eastern coastal regions from May to November. Flooding is common around Hanoi along the Red River and in the Mekong Delta. Plan Hue and Hoi An before October and check best time to visit Hanoi and best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City.

Meeting people, visas and emergency numbers

Hoi An is the easiest town to meet people: it is compact enough to cover on foot, and our solo cities collection calls it a forgiving first stop. Hanoi and Da Lat hostels run walking tours, cooking classes and motorbike loops. Do not ride a scooter without a licence, since insurers commonly refuse those claims.

Check do I need a visa for Vietnam and the Vietnam e-visa guide before you go; use only the official site. Emergency numbers are 113 police, 114 fire and 115 ambulance, and the UK government notes these are operated in Vietnamese only, so have your hostel or hotel call for you.
