Seoul Climate Card vs. T-Money: Which Transit Pass Should Tourists Buy?

Choose the Seoul Climate Card Tourist Pass if: You are spending 1 to 7 consecutive days staying within the Seoul municipal boundary (Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, Insadong) and anticipate taking 4 or more subway and bus rides per day.

Choose the Traditional T-Money Card if: Your itinerary includes day trips outside Seoul city limits (Incheon Airport AREX Express, Suwon, Everland, Nami Island), trips to Busan or Jeju, or you plan to make fewer than 3 transit journeys a day.

Seoul Climate Card tourist pass pricing and durations

Seoul Metropolitan Government introduced short-term tourist passes for the Climate Card designed specifically for international visitors. Pricing tiers are structured as follows:

• 1-Day Pass: 5,000 KRW (~$3.80 USD)

• 2-Day Pass: 8,000 KRW (~$6.00 USD)

• 3-Day Pass: 10,000 KRW (~$7.50 USD)

• 5-Day Pass: 15,000 KRW (~$11.30 USD)

• 7-Day Pass: 20,000 KRW (~$15.00 USD)

Physical cards cost 3,000 KRW to purchase at Seoul Subway Customer Service Centers (Lines 1–8) or designated convenience stores, and can be charged at transit kiosk machines using Korean won cash. The pass provides unlimited rides on Seoul Subway Lines 1–9, the Ui-Sinseol LRT, Sillim Line, and all Seoul municipal city buses.

Crucial exclusions: where the Climate Card does NOT work

The most common pitfall for foreign tourists is boarding regional trains where the Climate Card is invalid:

• AREX Airport Express non-stop train: Not covered (though all-stop AREX commuter trains from Gimpo Airport are included).

• Shinbundang Line (Gangnam to Pangyo): Excluded due to private operator surcharges.

• Subway stations outside Seoul: If you board inside Seoul and disembark at a station in Gyeonggi-do (such as Suwon on Line 1) not part of the unified agreement, the gate will trigger an error bell, requiring station master manual intervention and cash penalty fares.

T-Money versatility: nationwide transit and convenience stores
