How many days do you need in Seoul?

By · Published · Last updated

Three to five days is right for most first trips to Seoul. We spent 10 days there in 2023, in two blocks of 5: at the start of our Korea trip (7–12 June) and at the end (4–9 July). Three days covers the palaces and Bukchon, Insadong and Namsan, and Hongdae and the Han River; a fourth adds Gangnam and the big markets; a fifth is for a day trip. Beyond that, the extra days are better spent elsewhere in Korea, unless Seoul is your base for the whole trip.

The short answer by trip length

• 2 days: the palace district and Bukchon, then Namsan and one evening district. You see old and new Seoul, little else.

• 3 days: the minimum we would plan, one area per day, as in our 3 days in Seoul itinerary.

• 4 days: adds south of the river (Gangnam, Bongeunsa, Jamsil) or a full market day.

• 5 days: adds a day trip, such as Suwon's fortress or Seoraksan.

• More than a week: only if Seoul is your base or you split it into two stays, as we did.

Seoul is big and the subway is fast, but crossing the river and changing lines adds up. Plan by district, not by attraction.

Day by day: what 4 days in Seoul covers

Day 1, palaces and Bukchon. Gyeongbokgung at the 9:00 opening (closed Tuesdays, 3,000 won, free if you wear a hanbok), the Royal Guard ceremony at 10:00 or 14:00, then the Bukchon hanok lanes, which ask for quiet in the morning, and lunch in Samcheong-dong. A 6,000-won combined pass covers the four main palaces and Jongmyo; see our Gyeongbokgung guide.

Day 2, Insadong, Jogyesa and Namsan. Insadong's tea houses and craft shops, Jogyesa temple next door, Changdeokgung's Secret Garden (guided entry only), then N Seoul Tower for sunset and blue hour.

Day 3, Hongdae and the Han River. A slow day, then Hongdae's buskers and street food after dark and the riverside parks; the Banpo Bridge fountain runs on summer evenings.

Day 4, markets and Gangnam. Gwangjang Market for lunch, Myeongdong at night, or cross to Gangnam for Bongeunsa. Our night markets guide covers what to eat where.

Temples and palaces expect covered shoulders and knees; see our temple dress code guide.

Why we split our 10 days in two

Our Seoul time came in two 5-day blocks: on arrival in early June, and again in early July after a month going round the country through Jeonju, Suncheon, Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju and Sokcho. The route is in our 32-day South Korea itinerary.

Splitting works well when your flights go in and out of Seoul. The first stay absorbs jet lag and covers the palace district; the second picks up the markets, shopping and anything the weather spoiled. In our case the second block fell inside the summer rainy season, which usually reaches Seoul in late June, so indoor-friendly days (museums, markets, Lotte World) were the better plan. Change neighborhoods between the two stays so the second feels new.

What to do with 5 or more days

• Suwon: Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO-listed 18th-century wall circuit, is about an hour south on subway Line 1.

• Seoraksan and Sokcho: express buses take about 2.5 hours; it works as a long day trip but is better overnight. See our Sokcho and Seoraksan guide.

• Theme parks: a full day at Lotte World or Everland; our Lotte World vs Everland guide compares them.

• Gyeongju or Jeonju: both are reachable by KTX (about 2 hours and 1.5 to 2 hours), but each deserves at least one night rather than a day trip.

How many days in Seoul and Busan?

With a week, give Seoul 4 nights and Busan 3. With 10 days, about 5 and 4, or add Gyeongju between them as in our 10-day South Korea itinerary. We spent 4 days in Busan, the length our 4 days in Busan itinerary recommends.

The KTX from Seoul to Busan takes about 2 hours 15 minutes on the fastest trains and costs about 54,400 won in standard class since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger. Our Seoul to Busan KTX guide covers which Seoul station to use.

Where to stay and getting around

Jongno and Insadong put the palaces and Bukchon on foot; Myeongdong suits shoppers and has the airport limousine buses; Hongdae is livelier and on the AREX line from Incheon. Gangnam is convenient only if most of your plans are south of the river.

Buy a T-money card on arrival, or compare it with the unlimited Climate Card if you will ride a lot; see our Climate Card vs T-money guide. From Incheon, the AREX All-Stop train costs about 4,750 won from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station; see the Incheon airport guide. You do not tip in Seoul restaurants or taxis.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days in Seoul enough?

Yes, for a first trip if you plan one area per day: the palaces and Bukchon, then Insadong and Namsan, then Hongdae and the Han River. A fourth day adds Gangnam and the markets.

Is 5 days in Seoul too much?

No, if the fifth day is a day trip such as Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress or Seoraksan. We spent 10 days in Seoul, split into two 5-day stays at the start and end of our trip.

How many days should I spend in Seoul and Busan?

With a week, 4 nights in Seoul and 3 in Busan. With 10 days, about 5 and 4, or 3 and 3 with Gyeongju in between. The KTX takes about 2 hours 15 minutes.

What day is Gyeongbokgung closed?

Tuesdays. It opens at 9:00, costs 3,000 won, and is free if you wear a hanbok. The guard ceremony runs at 10:00 and 14:00.

What is the best day trip from Seoul?

Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress, about an hour on subway Line 1, is the easiest. Seoraksan via Sokcho is about 2.5 hours each way by express bus and is better with an overnight.
