How should you plan a honeymoon in Bali?

By · Published

For a Bali honeymoon, split 10 to 14 nights between two or three bases: the hills around Ubud, a quiet rice-terrace or highland stop, and a few nights on the coast. The best months are the dry season, roughly April to October, and the practical mistakes to avoid are a scooter, cheap cocktails and a trip with a transfer every other day. We spent about two and a half weeks in Bali in May and June 2023: Seminyak (3 days), Munduk (3), Ubud (5), Kintamani (2), Sidemen (3) and Padangbai (2). We recommend this route as one pattern and make no claim that we honeymooned there.

The route: three bases in 10 to 14 nights

Ubud (5 days for us) is the base for rice terraces, temples, markets, cooking classes and spas: see where to stay in Ubud and the Ubud guide. Munduk (3 days) in the northern highlands is the quietest option, with waterfalls and lake views, and a long drive from the airport. Sidemen (3 days) in the east is a rice-terrace village with Mount Agung views and few crowds. Seminyak (3 days) is the beach-and-restaurant coast, and the place for sunset dinners.

A honeymoon version of our route is: 4 nights Ubud, 3 nights Munduk or Sidemen, 3 to 4 nights Seminyak. Our route in full is the 18-day Bali itinerary, 10 days in Bali is the shorter option, and pacing is in how many days in Bali. For romantic places elsewhere, see our most romantic destinations.

When to go

The wet season runs roughly October to March, with local flooding in the south, so April to October is the better window for a honeymoon: best time to visit Bali, Bali in July and Bali in December. Two events change a honeymoon. Nyepi, the Day of Silence, closes the airport for 24 hours and confines everyone to their accommodation: Nyepi 2027. Galungan and Kuningan are festival periods: Galungan and Kuningan 2026 and 2027.

What to book and what to leave open

Book the first and last nights and the villa or hotel in Ubud ahead, especially from June to September, since the best-rated small properties fill early. Leave the middle open: you can adjust nights between Munduk, Sidemen and the coast once you see how the weather and your energy are.

Spend on the things that matter on a honeymoon: a private-pool villa in Ubud or Sidemen with breakfast included, a driver for day trips, a sunrise at Mount Batur from Kintamani (we spent 2 days there) if you are fit enough for an early hike, and a sunset dinner on the coast. Skip the nightlife strips unless that is the point. Cooking classes and spa treatments are widely available in Ubud and are easy to book on arrival, so you do not need to fix them months ahead.

Padangbai (2 days for us) is the port for fast boats and a quiet alternative to the busy south coast, useful if you want a snorkelling stop before flying out.

What a honeymoon in Bali costs

Our model's typical band for Bali is US$30 to $60 per person per day on a budget and US$80 to $160 at mid-range, from published 2025 and 2026 cost guides, not what we spent. Bands assume two people sharing a room, which is the honeymoon case. Honeymooners usually spend above the mid-range band on a private-pool villa and a driver, and the villa nightly rate is the biggest variable. We do not quote villa rates because they vary by season and property. Full budget: how much a trip to Bali costs.

Getting around as a couple

A driver for day trips costs less per head with two people, and removes the scooter question. Scooter crashes are the most common serious injury to visitors, and police checkpoints target tourists: legally you need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle category plus your home licence. See the Bali scooter rental guide. For rides in the south and Ubud, Grab or Gojek car rides work, and the airport has an official taxi counter: Bali airport arrival.

Swim between the flags on south-coast beaches because of rip currents. Insurance with medical evacuation is worth having: travel insurance for international trips.

Entry, dress and food

The foreign tourist levy is published as IDR 150,000 per person and is paid through the official Love Bali site: Bali tourist levy and e-VOA and the e-VOA guide. Check do I need a visa for Bali.
