Is Bali good for solo travel?

By · Published

Yes, Bali is one of the easiest places in Asia to travel alone, with a large community of solo travelers and remote workers in Ubud and Canggu, but the risks are real and mostly personal: scooters, drinks and the sea. The US State Department rates Indonesia as a whole Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (advisory issued July 2026), and Bali is not singled out. The UK Foreign Office says reported rapes and sexual assaults are high in Bali and Lombok. We spent about two and a half weeks in Bali in May and June 2023: Seminyak (3 days), Munduk (3), Ubud (5), Kintamani (2), Sidemen (3) and Padangbai (2). This page covers safety, costs, bases and the solo-specific decisions.

How safe is Bali for a solo traveler?

Be careful in poorly lit areas at night, use registered taxis or app rides and share your journey with a friend, and never leave a drink unattended. The UK government reports drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands, and deaths from methanol in drinks, including counterfeit spirits. Stick to beer or sealed drinks you watch being opened, and avoid very cheap cocktails and arak of unknown origin. Full page: is Bali safe to visit, plus named scams in tourist scams in Bali.

LGBT+ travelers should be discreet in public. Bali is relaxed in practice, but police have arrested people at LGBT+ events elsewhere in Indonesia. Drugs: Indonesia has zero tolerance, including for cannabis in every form, and sentences include long prison terms.

Scooters: the decision that matters most

Scooter crashes are the most common serious injury to visitors. Traffic in Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta is chaotic, and the hill roads around Munduk and Sidemen are steep and narrow. Legally you need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle category plus your home licence, police run checkpoints that target tourists, and insurers commonly refuse claims from unlicensed riders. Alone, nobody is behind you if you crash. If you are not an experienced rider, use Grab or Gojek rides in the south and Ubud, or hire a car with a driver for day trips. See the Bali scooter rental guide.

What solo travel in Bali costs

Our model's typical band for Bali is US$30 to $60 per person per day on a budget and US$80 to $160 at mid-range, from published 2025 and 2026 cost guides, not what we spent. Those assume a shared room. In our estimates, a room to yourself raises the accommodation line by roughly 1.5 times on a budget and 2 times at mid-range. Dorm beds in Bali run about US$6 to $13 a night in published averages.

Add the foreign tourist levy, published as IDR 150,000 per person; pay it only through the official Love Bali site, as lookalike sites exist, and see the Bali tourist levy and e-VOA process, the e-VOA guide and do I need a visa for Bali. Where to base yourself

Ubud (5 days) is the solo capital of Bali. Its yoga studios and retreat centres are built around single attendees by default, not couples or groups, which flips the usual solo-travel dynamic where everything feels designed for two. Read where to stay in Ubud, the Ubud guide and Ubud Monkey Forest tips.

Seminyak (3 days) is the beach-and-restaurant base with the most nightlife, and so the place to apply the drink and taxi rules strictly. Munduk (3 days) in the northern highlands is quiet and good for waterfalls and walking; Sidemen (3 days) in the east is a rice-terrace village with Mount Agung views, and best with a driver or your own wheels; Kintamani (2 days) is the Mount Batur sunrise-hike base. We then went on to Padangbai (2 days), the port for fast boats, and on to Java and Mount Ijen, covered in Bali to Ijen.

Rabies is present in dogs and monkeys, so seek medical help immediately after any bite or scratch. South-coast surf beaches have strong rip currents, so swim between the flags where there are lifeguards. Fast boats to Nusa Penida, Lombok and the Gilis have a mixed safety record, so look for life jackets. Take travel insurance that covers medical evacuation: travel insurance for international trips.

Meeting people

Ubud and Canggu have the densest solo scene, with yoga, cooking classes, co-working spaces and group day trips. Hostels in Ubud and Seminyak run organised nights. If you move to quieter places like Munduk or Sidemen, expect to be alone most of the day, which suits a slower trip.
