A 12-day trip to Turkey costs roughly $1,100 to $1,550 per person on a budget and $1,500 to $2,200 mid-range, including a return flight from the US. On the ground that is about $25 to $45 a day on a budget and $60 to $100 mid-range, the bands in our daily travel budget by country. Buses, food and rooms are cheap; museum and site tickets priced in euros, and a Cappadocia balloon flight, are not. We spent 33 days in Turkey in October and November 2023: Istanbul for 16 days, Ankara for 4, Goreme for 5, Pamukkale for 3 and Selcuk for 5. The figures below are typical 2026 prices from official pages and cost guides, not what we spent. Istanbul runs above the national band in some guides, so treat the low end as outside the city.

Rate used: about 49.7 lira to the US dollar, from our October 2026 snapshot. The lira keeps losing value, so lira prices rise even when dollar prices barely move, and a Wego cost guide reports it fell about 17 percent against the dollar in the year to mid-2026.
• Budget: about $300 to $540 on the ground, plus the flight. Dorm beds, lokanta lunches, street food, tram and metro, overnight buses.
• Mid-range: about $720 to $1,200 on the ground, plus the flight. 3 or 4 star hotels shared between two, restaurant dinners, paid sights and a domestic flight or two.
• Comfort: above $100 a day. Cave hotels and a balloon ride each take a day's mid-range budget on their own.
Wego's 2026 guide gives the same shape in euros: €25 to €45 (≈ $28–50) a day on a budget and €55 to €90 (≈ $61–100) mid-range, excluding flights.

Our October 2026 fare snapshot, built from real fares travellers found and so leaning low, shows US returns to Turkey at about $810 to $1,000, averaging near $890, and Canada about $800 to $1,210. From the UK a flight is about $170 to $260, and from Germany roughly $140 to $240. From Australia expect about $1,010 to $1,300.
Turkey is a country where the flight dominates a short budget trip: the ground costs for 12 days can be less than the ticket. Wego's 2026 guide puts an Istanbul hostel dorm at about €10 to €15 (≈ $11.2–16.7), private rooms from around €30 (≈ $33), mid-range Istanbul hotels at about €100 to €180 (≈ $112–201) and Cappadocia cave hotels at €90 to €250 (≈ $100–279). Other guides give a wider dorm range of €8 to €20 (≈ $8.9–22). Istanbul is the dearest city; Selcuk, Pamukkale and Ankara cost less.
Our route used 16 days in Istanbul in two visits, 5 in Goreme for Cappadocia, 3 in Pamukkale and 5 in Selcuk. For where to sleep in the city, see where to stay in Istanbul. Cave rooms in Goreme are the one place a mid-range budget bends toward comfort.

Public transit is the cheapest line. Wego's guide quotes about 35 lira per ride on an Istanbulkart (roughly €0.65 (≈ $0.73)), with the card itself around 165 lira, and higher cash fares for single-use tickets. Overnight buses are the budget connector: Istanbul to Cappadocia about €18 to €28 (≈ $20–31) and Istanbul to Antalya about €22 to €35 (≈ $25–39) in that guide, taking 10 to 12 hours to Cappadocia. A flight takes about 75 minutes plus a transfer to Goreme; see Istanbul to Cappadocia, flight vs night bus.
Then onward: Cappadocia to Pamukkale. Airport transfers in Istanbul are in Istanbul Airport to the city. For the capital leg, the fast train is covered in Istanbul to Ankara by YHT.
Eating at a lokanta (local eatery) costs a fraction of a dinner on the tourist strip. See what to eat in Istanbul, what to buy at a grocery store in Turkey and tipping in Turkey. Watch for the scams in tourist scams in Istanbul.
Sites are where the budget goes. From our pages: Hagia Sophia costs €25 (≈ $28) for foreign visitors on the gallery route (Hagia Sophia tickets); Ephesus is €40 (≈ $45) plus €15 (≈ $16.7) for the Terrace Houses (Ephesus tickets); Pamukkale is €30 (≈ $33) (Pamukkale tickets). Those three alone are about €95 (≈ $106), or $105, before a museum pass or Topkapi.
A Cappadocia balloon flight is the big one-off. Wego gives €150 to €250 (≈ $167–279) per person; other operator-comparison sites show standard flights from about €80 (≈ $89) in low season up to €300 (≈ $335) or more in peak months. See balloon cancellations and booking.

• Go in shoulder season (April to May, September to October); see Turkey in September and Turkey in April.
• Take one night bus instead of a flight on the longest leg.
• Pick sites by priority. Hagia Sophia, Ephesus and Pamukkale cost about €95 (≈ $106) together.
