September is the best month for a Turkey trip that mixes culture with a swim: the Mediterranean is at its warmest (Antalya's sea averages about 27.4°C (81°F)), Cappadocia is dry and warm (about 25.3°C (78°F) by day, only 14 mm of rain), and Istanbul is comfortable at 24.6°C (76°F). The cost is heat at the ancient sites, with Pamukkale about 31°C (88°F) and Antalya 31.7°C (89°F) by day, and Istanbul is the wettest of the group. We were in Turkey from 12 October to 14 November 2023, so we did not see September ourselves; the numbers are 1991 to 2020 normals from the Turkish State Meteorological Service as listed for each city.
• Weather: hot on the coast and at Pamukkale and Ephesus, warm in Istanbul and Cappadocia, nights cooling.
• Sea: warm. Antalya's sea averages about 27.4°C (81°F).
• Crowds: lower than July and August; popular sites remain busy.
• Holidays: no national holidays in September. 30 August (Victory Day) falls just before.
• Ramadan and Bayrams: none; Ramadan 2027 is 8 February to about 9 March and Kurban Bayramı is 16 to 19 May.
• Skip September if: you cannot tolerate midday heat at the open-air sites.

Turkish State Meteorological Service 1991 to 2020 normals as listed for each city.
• Istanbul: highs 24.6°C (76°F), lows 17.4°C (63°F), about 81 mm. The wettest here; showers are likely but the Bosphorus ferries still run.
• Cappadocia (Nevşehir): highs 25.3°C (78°F), lows 11.3°C (52°F), about 14 mm. Warm days, cool nights, very dry.
• Pamukkale (Denizli): highs 31°C (88°F), lows 17.2°C (63°F), about 16 mm. The white terraces have no shade.
• Aegean (İzmir, nearest station to Ephesus): highs 29.5°C (85°F), lows 19.5°C (67°F), about 24 mm.
• Mediterranean coast (Antalya): highs 31.7°C (89°F), lows 20.1°C (68°F), about 22 mm, with the sea at 27.4°C (81°F).
Plan Ephesus and Pamukkale for the first and last hours of the day; the middle of the day on marble or travertine is hard going.
• No national public holidays fall in September, so offices, banks and transport run normally.
• Victory Day, 30 August, is the last public holiday before the month.
• Kurban Bayramı and Ramadan are well away from September in 2027 (16 to 19 May and 8 February to about 9 March), so there are no closures to plan for. See Ramadan 2027 in Istanbul if you are combining seasons.

Our month in Turkey ran Istanbul (16 days over two stays), Ankara (4), Göreme (5), Pamukkale (3) and Selçuk (5). In September, the same sequence works and adds a coast option.
• Cappadocia: September is dry, so balloon cancellations are less likely than in winter; still book flexible mornings. See how many days in Cappadocia and the balloon guide. We spent 5 days in Göreme with a visit to the Derinkuyu underground city; see the Derinkuyu guide.
• Pamukkale: go early or at sunset; see the Pamukkale day trip guide.
• Ephesus from Selçuk: open at first light; see Ephesus tickets and the Terrace Houses.
• Istanbul: 3 days in Istanbul and day trips from Istanbul.
The coast (Antalya, Kaş, Fethiye) is the swimming add-on for September; we did not travel it, so use the Turkey 10-day itinerary for ideas and plan your own coastal days.
September and April are the two months the national weather figures favour, but they suit different trips. April is cooler everywhere (Istanbul about 16°C and Cappadocia about 16°C by day) and has no beach; September adds a warm sea and dry Cappadocia days, at the price of 30 to 32°C at Pamukkale and the Mediterranean coast. See Turkey in April for the spring picture.
October, when we travelled, is cooler again: our month ran from 12 October to 14 November 2023, which is why our guides lean toward the autumn route of Istanbul, Ankara, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus. If your dates float, late September gets the warm sea and the first cooler evenings together.
The one clear risk in September is Istanbul rain: the city's average of about 81 mm is the highest in the table, so keep a flexible plan for ferries and the covered Grand Bazaar area on wet days. Our Istanbul best-time guide has the month-by-month detail.

September is cheaper than July and August on the coast and quieter at the sights than midsummer. Cappadocia stays popular because the weather is ideal, so book rooms and balloons early. Overall costs are in how much does a trip to Turkey cost, tipping is in tipping in Turkey, and entry rules are in do I need a visa to visit Turkey. Domestic flights link Istanbul to Cappadocia; see flight vs night bus.
Light breathable clothes, a sun hat, sunscreen, sandals plus sturdy shoes for stone, a thin jacket for Cappadocia dawns and swimwear. Carry a scarf or long layer for mosques; see what to wear in Istanbul and the Turkey packing list. For the spring alternative, see Turkey in April; for the whole year, best time to visit Turkey.
Yes. The Mediterranean averages about 27°C (81°F), Istanbul 25°C (76°F) by day, and Cappadocia is dry at about 25°C (77°F). Pamukkale and the coast are hot at 31 to 32°C (88 to 90°F).
On the coast and at Pamukkale and Ephesus it can feel hot, with highs of about 30 to 32°C (86 to 90°F), so visit early or late. Cappadocia and Istanbul are comfortable.
Yes. Antalya's sea averages about 27.4°C (81.3°F) in September.
Little outside Istanbul. Normals give about 14 mm in Cappadocia, 16 mm in Denizli, 22 mm in Antalya and 81 mm in Istanbul.
No national holidays. Victory Day is 30 August, and Ramadan and Kurban Bayramı fall in February to March and May.
